This paper mainly analyses the feasibility of the Hilbert modulation theory on gear fault diagnosis. In order to verify the theory

a practical diagnostic example of automotive gearbox is illustrated in the paper. In the end of the paper

the author points out two fundamental problems that should be enough noticed in gearbox diagnosis.
