Since windage power loss from spiral bevel gear in aero application has adverse influence on aero engine fuel efficiency,it is beneficial to conduct investigation on minimizing the loss. The simulation analysis of the windage loss of spiral bevel gear is carried out,the influences of four different types of baffles on the windage loss are studied,the influence of varying distance between baffles and gear,with different gear tooth tangential velocities is considered. Taking the central drive spiral bevel gear of an aero engine as example,the preliminary evaluation of applying baffle in practical design is conducted. The results indicate that baffle could significantly reduce windage loss,by nearly 75%,whereas a failed configuration of baffle will increase windage loss,by 25%. The higher influence is achieved with smaller distance between baffle and gear. The similar trends are obtained with different gear tooth tangential velocities.
